Church Retreat at Camp Friedenswald

This is the second year that we have gone to Camp Friedenswald for the Fall Retreat. This year was a bit wild logistically, but we could really feel how much more at home we feel in the congregation, and with the traditions of Retreat.

I always took my tray to sit with the big boys (middle schoolers).

Can you guess who filled this plate? And do you see what I am eating first? Isn't camp life GREAT?

There are lots of kids and parents and non-kids and non-parents to eat with and hang out with and get to know better.

A huge highlight is The Survival Game. Each person (who wishes to participate, and you can see that the average age is probably 8) is assigned an identity, either an herbivore or a carnivore or omnivore, and we have to find water and food and avoid creatures higher up the food chain. Chasing around through the woods at its best.

Me, Sam and Conrad worked as an omnivore team.

Adam and some other kids checked out this new boardwalk over the fen (a spring-fed, seeping wetland). They ran to the gravel path, took a stone or two, ran back and tossed them in...repeat ad infinitum. Too bad for the quiet pond life, lots of fun for the kiddos.

In the middle of the day we headed back into Goshen to help celebrate Grandma and Grandpa Rhodes' 70th wedding anniversary. Fun cousin play time!

We returned to camp for the Talent Show, and Theo helped the adults in our small group sing a couple of silly songs. The wonderful day ended with popcorn made in a huge cauldron over a campfire (and then there were worship and lunch the next day). Can't wait for next October!
