Late Summer Activities

This summer we have been in Goshen a fair bit, and have found interesting things to do in our house and around town.

Through a friend we found out about Peace Camp, where Theo and Adam learned yoga poses and tae kwon do moves, all focused on respecting yourself and others. Morgan joined them, too. The last day there was aboard breaking ceremony, and just so you know, there are a variety of thicknesses of boards, so the idea is that everyone can crack one of them.

Theo cracked his board, and really wanted to try a thicker one--next year, I guess. Morgan also kicked her board to smithereens!

Now about Adam. We had another confirmation of the current reality that this kid does not flourish in the spotlight. He had been saying that he was not going to try to break a board, but since everyone was doing it, her decided to try. And try he did, but he just didn't get it. His mother, sitting quietly with her camera, wanted to shout out, "You can do it! Move closer to the board." But I kept quiet. It got a bit sad--Adam began to cry, and the teacher let him know that he was brave for trying as many times as he did. So true. And not everyone every year does break the board.

The compassion of a yogi.

Later, when we asked Adam how all this made him feel, he said, "Everyone's eyes were taking away my power." Interesting.

Little brother watching the big boys get some work done.

Some days this July/August it has felt even too hot for water play. Mitch has taken the boys to the pool quite a bit, too.

Fun "new" large motor gym (Grandma Charlene's rocking chair).

You gotta keep an eye on this guy all the time these days.

Inspired by the song Kitchen Band (Kentucky T. Dutchersmith and the Rubber Band), the boys got groovy.

I broke out my old Household Experiments books, and the boys chose...making rock candy (basically, pure sugar you get to eat eventually). Our rock candy experiment is on-going. Not much action yet in terms of evaporation/crystal formation.

Ira gets into new things each day...lots of fun to observe.
