Portland, Day Three

We three cousins had a lot of fun playing together during our time in Portland.

On Saturday we headed into downtown Portland on the MAX train.

This picture may give you a sense of the atmosphere. Adam picked this cardboard sign up from the pavement and carried it around for a while before we noticed what it said. As we took a few pictures, a young woman with a big camera started snapping some, too, as passersby grinned and enjoyed the scene, and Mommy had to ask her to stop! As for the atmosphere, we went to the Saturday Market and it reminded me of the Bangkok Sunday Market, with its endless stalls and good food smells and crafts etc. Theo spent the most time in a booth with rocks and crystals, and ended up purchasing a quartz crystal. Another thing that reminded me of Bangkok was the heat (although it was much dryer than Thailand).

On the way to Powell's Books, where the grown-ups snatched a few moments of browsing while the kids pulled all the superhero books--and more--from the shelves.

For an early supper Brad took us to a "kaitenzushi" place, with all kinds of sushi coming around on little price-coded plates on a conveyor belt. It was so authentic, and such cheap sushi, we were in heaven!

The day could not end without a visit to water. The statues in this park represent the characters from the Ramona books, by Beverly Cleary, which were set in Portland.

It was at this park that we must place the only real tragedy of the trip--we think we left a little backpack here. It it was mostly replaceable stuff, except for Grandpa Mark's Tilley hat. Bummer indeed. Bogus.
