We went to Iowa toward the end of August, since we hadn't been able to go there as a family this whole summer, and we wanted to talk about our summer and Willa with our good friends out there.

Guess what I did the first thing on the first morning there?

We had time to play outside, and I spent part of it cleaning the dusty car.

This is a picture of us with Daddy's Grandma Yoder from last fall. When we were on our way out to Iowa Grandma Charlene called to say that Grandma Yoder was getting closer to dying. She had been sick for a long time, but for most of that time she was always glad to see us and watch us play. The special toys she had for children moved with her even into her last room in nursing care. Late on Saturday night she died. We were glad she wasn't hurting anymore, but we miss her.

Sunday night the Yoders got together and while the grownups talked, we drew pictures for Grandma Yoder.

On Monday we went to see Grandma Yoder's body at the funeral home, and Stacy read the great-grandchildren a book about dying. The pastor also talked to us, and they opened the casket so we could see that she was just lying there like she was sleeping, with her shoes on and everything.

Grandma Yoder in her casket.

This picture is of Grandma Yoder's soul.

We got to put our pictures in the casket with Grandma Yoder. The next day we went to the burial, and then the funeral (we got to play in the nursery then), and had lunch before heading home. It was a longer trip than we had expected, and very different, but we were glad we could be with family. If Willa hadn't been born yet, we might have missed this important family time, too.

No matter the occasion, it is always fun to hang around with Uncle Chris!
